Victory over Sin and Addictions-Part-2

Key Scripture:

1 John 5:18 (KJV)  We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

SUMMARY

We can learn from this sermon the struggle we have with sin and the ways to overcome it especially from the First Epistle of John. Sin is our greatest enemy and it is a real battle everyday to keep away from it. This sermon highlights 5 ways we can overcome this enemy from God’s Word. Let us be equipped with the Sword of the Spirit and fight the wicked one who tries to entangle us with sin and addictions.

SERMON POINTS

 Struggle with sin.

Hebrews 12:1 (KJV) Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Sin is something that easily entangles us and disturbs our communion with the Lord. It separates us from the presence of God and we fall into the snare of the devil.  The Bible tells us it follows us, almost pursuing you, crouching at our doors waiting to take us prey.

Often Sin is regarded harmless and ignored with a false notion that every sin under the heavens have been forgiven and that all has been set right. If Sin had been done away with, these epistles would not have been written at the first place.

Adam the first human fell into sin because of the devil and he has passed it down onto us, and that seed of sin dwells in us, making us incapable to do any good.

Sin is dangerous; destroying every bit of holiness that we would have ever worked towards.Anything that takes us away from the presence of God is sin be it our cellphones, Television shows, even certain lifestyle choices leave an open door for sin and sinning repeatedly is an addiction.

The good news is that Jesus Christ came so that we can be free from this magnetic horror called sin that follows us every moment and we can only be cleansed from it by His precious Blood.

Ways we can be victorious over sin?

As adhesive as sin can be the Bible shows us steps in which we can keep away sin from our lives. There is sin that follows us even after the completed work of Christ on the cross and that is why St. John makes 27 references to sin in 1 John in the New Testament which helps us get into a habit of being conscious of our lives being in line with the Holy One.

  1. Confession of sins:

1 John 1:8-10 (KJV)   If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

In the presence of God, we should take time to introspect our lives in the light of His holiness. We deceive ourselves when we say we haven’t sinned. If we confess our sins then the Lord is faithful to forgive us. With peer pressure, sin is always at our necks. It is so important to introspect whether we have offended God in any way or not.

1 John 1:3 (KJV)  That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

Being associated with darkness can only lead to a sinful life but fellowship with God through prayer, worship and the ministry of God’s word can help us overcome sin. There is no deliverance without confession. Let us get into the habit of putting ourselves before the presence of God as an open book each day and evaluate our spiritual lives.

  1. Commitment to do His Word:

1 John 2:1-6 (KJV) My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

There is a constant urge to sin within us. The commitment to keep God’s word is what helps us overcome that urge. The Bible tells us that the Law of the Lord is by which we are warned and by keeping them there is great reward. (Psalm 19) We also find the Lord Jesus telling us that if we love Him we must obey His commandments. By doing so, the love of God is perfected in us, especially when we walk as our Lord Jesus walked.  When we are committed to keep His commandments , we enter into the blessed realm of communing with Him. His commandments reveal who He is and we should be passionate in obeying those.

  1. Communion of the Holy Spirit:

1 John 2:15-17 (KJV)  Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

We are not to love the world. The glory and medals of this world are vain. All we have is supposed to be for the Kingdom of God be it our homes, families, material possessions, even our influence.

1 John 2:27 (KJV)  But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him

The Bible tells us that the anointing of the Holy Spirit abides in us and He is the one who teaches us the way in which we are to walk. When He is in you and you have a constant communion with Him you can hear Him teach you the right thing. The world will allure us to itself, but when we have the communion of the Holy Spirit inside of us we would escape from every dart of the evil one.

  1. Conviction to be righteous

1 John 3:9-10 (KJV)  Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.  In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

There are two groups of people in the world- children of God and children of the devil. When we are the children of God, we have His seed in us. His righteousness and grace is in us. When His seed is in us, the power of sin is rendered powerless. We are saved from addictions because His seed is there in us. Not only following righteousness but even loving your brother determines whether we are of God or not. To what extent would you love?

1 John 3:16-18 (KJV)   Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

Laying down our lives for one another should be our standard in love. Without love towards those around us, we cannot say the love of God dwells within us. Let us not only speak of loving but also show it in our actions.

  1. Confidence in God:

1 John 5:18-19 (KJV)  We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not. And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.

Last but definitely in no way the least is, having the confidence in God  Whosoever has been of God cannot sin. Our Lord Jesus who is the begotten of God keeps us in His love. This is the confidence we have in God, that He is able to keep us from sin even when the whole wold is filled with wickedness. The wicked one will not be able to touch us as long as we are kept by the Lord Jesus.

CONCLUSION.

People say there is no more sin in the world because Jesus Christ washed them all away. They disregard the existence of sin and thereby deceive themselves. Sin will eventually catch up with us. Denial of sin cannot be the solution to overcome sin.Today, whatever maybe that sin or addiction that is holding you back from God, get into His word, let it convict you to confess your sins and lead you to the precious cleansing power of His Blood. We have victory over sin and addictions by the precious blood of the Lord Jesus. Above all as we are committed for this warfare, He will keep us from all the evil attacks when we live in the light of His presence.
