Victory over Death

Key Scripture:

Philippians 3:20 (KJV)  For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

This sermon helps us understand the ways in which we encounter death. The Lord Jesus Christ has won over death and He promises us the same victory. To take the victory over death, we must first learn the different ways death takes hold over our lives and how in obedience to God’s word, we can overcome the power of death and its sting.

 Power of Death

‘Death’. The very word brings a chill down our spine. If we are born, we will die one day. We all are under the threat of death, running closely parallel to that dividing line between life and death. The Bible tells us that we can have victory over death. Let us see the different ways in which we encounter death in our lives and how the Word of God gives us a way to gain victory over death.

Ways in which Death overtakes us:

  1. Spiritual Death:

Ephesians 2:1,5,6 (KJV)   And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

Ever since we are born, we are dead in sin. (Psalm 51) When we are sinful, without the reality of the Savior, death is working in us and our spirits are not connected with God. But when you are born again and believe in the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, you are quickened by His power.

Romans 6: 2-4 (KJV)  God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Just accepting the saving grace of the Lord does not keep us from spiritual death, we need to have a vibrant relationship and fellowship with Him. By being baptized, we accept His death and our raised into new creation by His resurrecting power and now we are seated with Christ in heavenly places. (Ephesians 1:3)

  1. Faith without works is dead:

James 2:17,18 (KJV)  Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

If we claim to have only faith and no works to support our claims, then our faith is dead. We need to live by what we believe. Faith is not only for receiving from the Lord but it is being willing to offer all that we have up to the Lord like Abraham, who didn’t even hesitate to sacrifice his only son Isaac.

James 2:23-26 (KJV)  And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Faith should be seen in our works like Rahab though a harlot, protects the messengers, who came to spy the land. Our faith should be seen in our works to provide, protect and bless the church and the man of God.

  1. Negative Character causes Death:

Proverbs 5:3-5 (KJV)  For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.

The way of the strange woman leads to death, that’s what the Bible teaches us. Strange woman here, refers to anything that moves you away from the system which God has established. Anything that moves you away from living a godly life, being a part of church fellowship and also from your family causes death. The only thing that should instruct us is the Word of God and we must be willing to accept its instruction. (Proverbs 5:6-9)

Proverbs 2: 10, 16, 18 (KJV)  When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words; Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God. For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead.

The Lord has asked us to search for wisdom which brings both long life and riches. (Proverbs 3:13,15)

  1. Spirit gives Life:

2 Corinthians 3:6 (KJV)  Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

The Spirit of God and the anointing of the Holy Spirit gives us life. The law kills. Our worship defines the anointing we carry.

Psalms 115:17-18 (KJV)   The dead praise not the Lord, neither any that go down into silence. But we will bless the Lord from this time forth and for evermore. Praise the Lord.

The Psalmist says that the dead don’t praise God; therefore let’s give importance to spiritual worship and be an ambassador of praise for our generation.

  1. Ministry should have life:

Revelation 3:1,2 (KJV)  And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God

God wants us to have a ministry that doesn’t die out. Our ministry should have life.

  1. Victory over Physical Death:

Philippians 3:20,21 (NIV)  But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

The Lord Jesus Christ enables us with His power to transform our mortal bodies with its weaknesses and sicknesses into His glorious body where we will be transformed into His image.

Revelation 20:6, 14 (KJV)  Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

The second death can never overtake us and death and hell will be cast away into the lake of fire. By the power of His resurrection we will be able to have victory even when death stares us in the eye.

Death is inevitable. However we don’t have to succumb to death, especially when our Lord and Savior has paid the price and won over death and Hades. This sermon throws light on some of the areas in which we encounter death and how we overlook its effects on our spiritual growth. The Lord asks us to examine these areas and change according to God’s word and take our rightful victory over death as believers of Christ.
