Shema Israyel!-Part-2

Key Scripture:

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 (KJV)   Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.  Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

SUMMARY

The Jews were very particular when it came to loving the Lord. The used to recite the 3 Shema passages every morning and evening without fail. Having the realization of who our God id helps us love Him more and that love is evidently seen in our behaviour. This sermon helps us understand our behavior when we carry the words of the Lord in our heart and love Him with all our being.

SERMON POINTS

Our Response to the Realization of our God.

Deuteronomy 6:4-5 (KJV) Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

The Shema was recited in Jewish households every morning and evening without fail. This was not just important to the Jews. It is the very foundation for us New Testament believers as well. Jesus Christ said that the first and greatest commandment, was to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind.

The Shema begins with the realization of the Lord our God being one. He’s the only true God and no person or thing can take His place or glory. Our response to the realization of our God is we begin to love Him with all our heart, soul and strength.

God who is love created us in the image of love. He expects our love. As God spoke these words to Moses, He spoke with emotion and even today, the Lord desires that we love Him with all that we have. Let us love the Lord with all the possessions and influence, God has endowed us with.

Keeping His words in your heart.

Deutronomy 6:6 (KJV)    And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

The Lord commanded His people to treasure the words He spoke in their hearts. We need to not just read God’s word but also keep them in our hearts. It is the greatest means that can keep us on the path of righteousness. (Psalms 119:9). King David said that he has hidden God’s word in his heart that he might not sin against God. (Psalms 119:11). Even today, the word of God is powerful to cleanse us and change us for the better.

How will the love for God in you be revealed ?

  1. The love for God should be revealed in your teaching.

Deuteronomy 6:7-9 (KJV) And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.  And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

When you love God it will be revealed in your teaching. The Bible commanded the people of God to diligently teach their children the law of God. It is important to teach our children who our God is. When you love the Lord you would teach your children to do the same.

There are two ways you can teach your children. The first one being through your actions, lifestyle and speech. They learn to love and respect God by watching us do the same.

The other way we can teach them is by talking with them about the Bible, mentoring them in regard to what it says about God.

Psalms 119:97 (KJV) The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

We need to love His word, loving Him brings out the sweetness in His words. There is no break for God’s word when you have passion for His word. That is when we start teaching the word of God at all times. As you travel, relax and go about your day, let the teaching of God remain on our tongues teaching the next generation to love the Lord.

As we teach the word of God, we become like those we read about in the Bible.

  1. The love for God should be revealed in your serving.

Deuteronomy 11:13-21 (KJV)  And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul, That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil. And I will send grass in thy fields for thy cattle, that thou mayest eat and be full. Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them; And then the Lord’s wrath be kindled against you, and he shut up the heaven, that there be no rain, and that the land yield not her fruit; and lest ye perish quickly from off the good land which the Lord giveth you. Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates: That your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which the Lord sware unto your fathers to give them, as the days of heaven upon the earth.

The second Shema helps us understand that when you love the Lord it will be seen in our serving. We will start loving and serving God’s people. God has a purpose for you and in all the blessings. We need to serve the Lord with all our influence and talents. Let our marketplace become our pulpit. The blessings of serving God is huge. He will multiply our days and we would possess the promises of God.

Matthew 6:24 (KJV)  :”No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

Our lives must be a testimony attracting people to God by our lifestyle. The Bible tells us that we cannot serve both God and money. Money is important but it cannot be the ultimatum that affects our every decision in life. Let us make a choice to serve God. Possessions shouldn’t possess us. Let us be more accountable and serve more.

Serving the Lord brings a blessing on all that we have. Spiritual blessings are gathered in His presence as we are sold out for His work.

  1. The love for God should be revealed in your obeying.

Numbers 15:39-41 (KJV)  And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the Lord, and do them ; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring: That ye may remember, and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your God.  I am the Lord your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the Lord your God.

The love for God is revealed in our obedience to the word of God. The Jews would add tassels to the helm of their garments to reminder to obey God’s commandments.

1 John 5:2,3 (KJV)  By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.”

Apostle John tells us that as children of God we love God by keeping His commandments. As we love Him more and more, His commandments don’t become a burden to us; rather they help us live pure and holy lives.

CONCLUSION.

Shema Yisrael helps us understand what it means to love God. Our Lord, he is one God and as we love Him that love permeates into our teaching, serving and obeying. Let us begin to love the Lord our with all our hearts and let the God of love, Jesus Christ fill us with His love.
