Revering the Name of the Lord.

Key Scripture:

Malachi 4:2 (KJV)  But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.

SUMMARY

Our Great God is worthy to be praised and honored above all.  This sermon helps us understand this very aspect from the book of Malachi. We understand what it means to revere the Lord and how we need to honor Him in our daily walk.  There is a great blessing when we revere the Lord, because it is on them that the the Sun of righteousness will rise with healing in his wings.

SERMON POINTS

What does God expect us to do?

Malachi 1:11 (KJV) For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the Lord of hosts.

We see a prophetic view of the future as Malachi speaks this oracle. The Lord’s name would be great among the gentiles. He was probably seeing us (gentiles) taking up our place in worship.

The Lord is very particular about His Name. He expects us to fear His Name and honour Him as a Father and Master. The actual meaning of revere means to have a lot of admiration and respect for the Lord.

Malachi 1:6 (KJV) A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the Lord of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name?

Why we should heed to the Lord’s command?

Malachi 2:2 (KJV) If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the Lord of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart.

If we miss heeding to the voice of God in the matter of honouring the name of the Lord, we bring curse on ourselves. Let us examine ourselves and change our lifestyles in a way that we can honour God.

Malachi 2:5 (KJV) My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him for the fear wherewith he feared me, and was afraid before my name.

The greatest blessing in revering the Name of the Lord is that He makes a covenant with us, a covenant of life and peace. These days we see a culture of not honoring Him as a Father and Master.

With or without our knowledge we have failed to revere God. From the book of Malachi, God speaks His heart out regarding His Name. The Prophet Malachi outlined four ways in which the Israelites dishonored God . We should be aware of these so that we don’t fall into the trap of dishonoring God.

  • Worthless Gifts.

Malachi 1:12,13 (KJV) But ye have profaned it, in that ye say, The table of the Lord is polluted; and the fruit thereof, even his meat, is contemptible. Ye said also, Behold, what a weariness is it! and ye have snuffed at it, saith the Lord of hosts; and ye brought that which was torn, and the lame, and the sick; thus ye brought an offering: should I accept this of your hand? saith the Lord.

We have a notion in us that the Lord would accept all our gifts and offerings. God is not interested in our offerings as much as He is interested in us. When we come to God in sincerity and truth we would offer Him the best. The people of Israel brought the tor, the lame and sick as an offering and the Lord was against those.  From the story of Cain and Abel , we infer that God is interested in how we revere Him than how much we give Him. When we fear God, we give Him the best and never half heartedly.

Our worship and prayer must be in truth. Our actions and words must be an incense before the Lord.

Eli forgot to teach his sons how to honour God and that brought a curse upon his entire generation. Let us ever be careful to honour God and teach the same to our children.

  • Weary words.

Malachi 2:17 (KJV) Ye have wearied the Lord with your words. Yet ye say, Wherein have we wearied him? When ye say, Every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of the Lord, and he delighteth in them; or, Where is the God of judgment?

Our words can weary God. When our words are full of negativity filled with murmuring and lamenting, we disrespect Him. We have to therefore cultivate an attitude of gratitude. We should seek the help of God to stop words of negativity and rely on His strength to speak words of faith and hope.

  • Unfaithfulness

Malachi 2:11  (KJV) Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah hath profaned the holiness of the Lord which he loved, and hath married the daughter of a strange god.

Whatever God has given us, we must be faithful with it. All that we have, our family, our job, our kids and spouse, the church we go has been entrusted to us by God. We have to be faithful in the responsibility that is in our hands. Our God is a faithful God and He expects that same character from us.

  • Tithes

Malachi 3:10 (KJV) Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

Tithing is a command given by God. By choosing to follow it, we honour the Lord. When we forget to cultivate a lifestyle to give to the Lord, we rob Him.  God loves a cheerful giver. Tithing is a God honoring principle and when we do that , He is faithful to open the windows of heaven to pour out a blessing on us.

CONCLUSION.

Malachi 3:16 (KJV) Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name.

The Bible tells us that, a Book of Remembrance was written on behalf of those who feared and honoured God. Don’t accept your troubles as they come. Let’s introspect and see if there is anything that needs to be rectified. Let’s never make the mistake of dishonoring Him. Ask God and press for deliverance . The Sun of Righteousness will rise on us with healing in His wings.
